Jude Bellingham's first half brace, Harry Kane's penalty helped England progress to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at Mexico City Stadium. Jarell Quansah's unnecessary red card offense could've cost England dearly but their defense stood strong despite Mexico dominating the possession (66 per cent).

The first goal from Bellingham came in the 36th minute when he scored off a header. 98 seconds later, he got an assist from skipper Kane inside the box and converted it into a goal. A few minutes (42nd) later, Julian Quinones scored as the England defender wasn’t able to clear the ball after the co-hosts’ got a free kick.
Red card for Quansah
Early into the second half, England suffered a setback as Quansah was sent off for a dangerous foul on Jesus Gallardo in the 54th minute. But, England managed to extend the lead after Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel's ill-timed challenge. Kane took the penalty and did not disappoint. Rangel went in the right direction but could not stop the ball from going past him.
Kane scored off penalty, Kane concedes penalty
This was Kane's sixth goal of the ongoing tournament. It is also his 14th of World Cup career. He is now ranked fifth alongside Germany's Gerd Muller on the all-time list of most goals in World Cup history. Kane is also second in the golden boot race. Currently Argentina's Lionel Messi, France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland are tied at the top with seven goals each.
But, in the 69th minute, Kane ended up conceding a penalty. Rahul Jimenez outfoxed England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a stutter-step to narrow the gap to one goal. Kane scripted an unwanted record as he became the first player since 1966 to score and concede a penalty in a World Cup match.
For the rest of the game, 10-man England were able to thwart Mexico’s relentless attacks. 11 minutes were added and Mexico's attacks continued but they couldn’t find the equaliser.
Mexico’s wait continues
Mexico have been once again knocked out of the tournament without reaching the quarterfinals. Their 40-year-old wait continued after a loss to England.
