Iran's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 now depend on results elsewhere after the draw.

Iran's final FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage clash against Egypt witnessed an unusual scene even before kickoff, as sections of Iranian supporters booed their own team's national anthem inside Seattle's Lumen Field.

Some fans were also seen turning their backs during the pre-match ceremony, while others displayed Iran's pre-revolution flag in the stands. The incident came during a match that local organisers had promoted as the "Pride Match" and quickly drew attention worldwide.

Why did Iranian fans boo their national anthem?

The boos were not directed at the players themselves but were widely viewed as a form of political protest against Iran's current ruling establishment.

The anthem played before international sporting events represents the Islamic Republic of Iran, and some supporters have previously used major sporting occasions to express their opposition to the country's government. Similar scenes were witnessed during Iran's opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

According to a study published by Iran International, only 20% of Iranians support the continuation of the current Islamic Republic. The same survey reported that 40% of respondents believe regime change is necessary before meaningful reforms can take place, while another 24% favour a broader political transition.

Despite restrictions imposed by the United States authorities on bringing Iran's pre-revolution flags into World Cup stadiums, several supporters were seen displaying those flags during the match against Egypt.

Iran's knockout hopes remain alive

On the field, Iran's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage suffered a setback after they were held to a draw by Egypt. The match ended in dramatic fashion after Iran had a late winning goal ruled out, denying them all three points.

However, their World Cup journey is not over yet. Under the expanded 48-team format, the eight best third-placed teams also qualify for the Round of 32. Iran remain in contention for one of those spots but must now wait for the remaining group-stage fixtures to determine whether their tally is enough to secure qualification.
