Chelsea have dropped midfielder Enzo Fernandez from their next two matches as a disciplinary measure following his recent public comments about his future and interest from Real Madrid.

Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed the sanction on Friday, stating that Fernandez will miss Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City. The player has been linked with the Spanish giants recently, and his comments have cost him two games.

Rosenior, who spoke with the Argentine international about an hour before addressing the media, said the decision was made jointly with the club. He said:

“Enzo will NOT play tomorrow and against Man City. I have no bad words for him but a line was crossed and we had to SANCTION Enzo.”

The move comes amid ongoing speculation linking the 25-year-old vice-captain with a summer exit to Alvaro Arbeloa’s side, after comments he made during the recent international break that were seen as casting doubt on his commitment to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are sixth in the Premier League and will face Port Vale in the FA Cup tomorrow. The match will be followed by an encounter against Man City in the EPL on Sunday, April 12. Rosenior’s side is coming off a 3-0 loss against Everton in the Premier League.
