Collymore says Salah’s bench frustration doesn’t justify comparing himself to Messi or Ronaldo.

The former Liverpool striker insists Salah’s achievements don’t grant him untouchable status at the club.

Former Liverpool striker and expert Stan Collymore believes that Mohamed Salah has 'tricked himself' into believing he has the same stature as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Collymore's remarks come after Salah's explosive post-game interview after Liverpool's 3-3 draw against Leeds United on Saturday.

Did Mohamed Salah make a mistake by giving an explosive interview?

Salah, who was benched in the last three matches, voiced his disappointment with his reduced playing time after the game at Elland Road. He particularly told the reporters that he feels he has been 'thrown under the bus'  by Liverpool, and his bond with manager Arne Slot has broken down.

Talking about his bombshell interview, Collymore said that Salah has written his name in the pantheon of greats at Anfield. However, Collymore said that despite Salah's achievements with the Reds, it doesn't equate to the phenomenon of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

A part of his lengthy post on X read:

“The team are playing well in spurts, comedy defending and decision-making at other times. That includes everyone, and if you ask 99.9% of players if they'd accept 2 or 3 games on the bench for not hitting levels, all will say yes. Only in the madness of 2025 modern football would the cult of personalities not only question a reasonable conclusion of "you're not playing well, here's a spell on the bench", but Mo maybe has almost tricked himself onto elevating himself to the untouchable status of Messi or Ronaldo, players who could, if they chose, literally do and say as they pleased in the last decade. Mo isn't them, and Liverpool as I said, isn't that club either.”

So far this season, Salah has amassed five goals in 19 games for Liverpool.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah uses Harry Kane's example in explosive interview

Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah has voiced his frustration at not being treated fairly after being benched for three Premier League games in a row. The 33-year-old used former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane as an example during his recent interview.

After remaining an untouched substitute against Leeds, Salah said (via DaveOCKOP):

"I have been at this club, scoring more than anyone in this generation, since I came to the Premier League. I don’t think anyone has scored more goals and made more assists than me in the whole Premier League. I remember a while ago, Harry Kane was not scoring for 10 games, everyone in the media was like ‘oh, Harry will score for sure, when it comes to Mo everyone is like ‘he needs to be on the bench’. I am sorry Harry!”

Mohamed Salah has struggled to create an impact on the pitch this season, amassing five goals and three assists in 19 games across all competitions. However, he has excelled for Liverpool over the past eight years, garnering 250 goals and 116 assists in 420 total games.
