On June 24th, 2014, during a Group D match between Uruguay and Italy, in the 80th minute, Suárez competed for the ball with the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the penalty area. The Uruguayan bit the Italian and then fell to the ground. On June 25th, FIFA ruled that Suárez did bite Chiellini's shoulder and would be banned from nine official national team matches, from all soccer-related activity for four months, and would have to pay a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs. But this wasn't the first time Suarez was involved in such a controversy. He was first involved in a similar encounter on November 24th, 2010. During his time as Ajax captain, Luis Suárez had gotten a seven-game ban for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal's shoulder. On April 21st, 2013, when he was in Liverpool FC, Suárez had been handed a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Who can forget the MNS pair-up at Barcelona or the time when he rose to fame at Liverpool, now thanks to all the memes we also remember his controversial side. On June 24th, social media users began posting photographs of themselves biting other people on the shoulder accompanied by the hashtag #Suarezing.

Despite the repeated suspensions, Suarez's multiple involvements and especially in an international game made it even more controversial. Although the social media saw the funny side of it and portrayed Suarez as everything except a footballer. The controversy never came in between his footballing prowess as he went on to win several trophies with Barcelona and most recently with Atletico Madrid but the tag has surely dented his legacy. Is Suarezing still a trend or it's a long gone story? Well until Luiz Suarez is an active footballer you can never count it out.
