An Italian club has secured a place in European competition for the first time in its 119-year history. A hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Hellas Verona on Sunday afternoon mathematically guaranteed the side at least a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League, with the team sitting comfortably in fifth place in Serie A and still in contention for a higher finish.
THIS Italian club to play European football for the first time in club’s history
The achievement belongs to Como 1907, led by manager Cesc Fàbregas. Owner Mirwan Suwarso and the club’s board have been credited alongside the players for delivering this historic milestone. A goal from striker Anastasios Douvikas proved decisive, lifting the club to 65 points from 36 matches and ensuring they cannot drop below sixth place with two games remaining.
Just seven years ago, Como were competing in Italy’s fourth tier (Serie D) after multiple bankruptcies. Since Indonesian investors acquired the club in 2019, the club has climbed rapidly through the divisions: from Serie D to Serie C, then Serie B, and promotion to Serie A. Under Fàbregas, who took charge during their time in the second tier, they have now capped an extraordinary rise by booking European football for the 2026-27 season, potentially even the Champions League if results continue to swing their way.
