As Formula 1 continues to buzz with transfer rumors, Kimi Antonelli has admitted it’s “difficult to say” whether he would feel comfortable going head-to-head with Max Verstappen at Mercedes next season. The 18-year-old Italian, currently paired with George Russell, is navigating an uncertain future with the Silver Arrows despite a strong rookie campaign and a maiden Grand Prix podium to his name.
Mercedes faces driver dilemma
Antonelli joined the senior Mercedes team on a one-year deal after progressing through the team’s junior ranks. While his performances have been promising, the looming possibility of Verstappen’s arrival has thrown both his and Russell’s positions into question.
Verstappen, the reigning four-time world champion, is reportedly assessing his options amid Red Bull’s struggles with the RB21 and looming 2026 regulation changes. This has sparked speculation that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff could consider a high-profile swap, potentially bringing in Verstappen at the expense of either Russell or Antonelli.
Kimi Antonelli cautious about facing Max Verstappen
When asked if he’d be prepared to face Verstappen as a teammate, Antonelli remained measured in his response.
Difficult to say, he admitted. I have to say that George has already shown how strong he is. Max could be a further step up. So, this year I’m trying to gain as much experience as possible.
Despite the swirling rumors, Antonelli remains focused on his current role and insists he is not engaging in talks with other teams.
Do I talk to other teams? No, no, no, he stated ahead of the British Grand Prix. You know, I got this opportunity from Mercedes, and there are no talks going on with anyone else.
I’m very happy with where I am now, and I’m also confident that the team is happy with me... I just have to do my best now, limit the mistakes as much as possible, and try to get the most out of it.
Max Verstappen's future still unclear
While Mercedes fans speculate, Verstappen himself may not be in a hurry. The Dutch driver could opt to remain at Red Bull, monitoring how teams adapt to the sweeping 2026 regulation changes before making a move in 2027.
