Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has stirred excitement with a bold declaration that India is ramping up efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games, signaling a historic move for the nation that has yet to welcome the Olympics on its soil. This ambitious announcement follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's revelation during an International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai last year, where he unveiled the government's aspiration to bid for the prestigious global event.
The prospect of India, an Asian powerhouse, hosting the Olympic Games is not just a dream but a strategic move in the making, with the nation already setting its sights on the 2036 Games. Gujarat emerges as a potential powerhouse with four promising sites identified, despite Modi's strategic omission of a candidate city in his address to the IOC last October.
"For 2036 Olympics India needs to be ready. Organising the Olympics will be a huge thing and India is ready for that. Whenever the bidding process begins, India will certainly bid with full power and will organise Olympics in India," Anurag Thakur said on Tuesday.
India has hosted the Commonwealth Games and the U-17 FIFA World Cup
India's rich history of hosting international multi-sport events, including the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 and the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017, sets the stage for its Olympic aspirations. However, orchestrating an event of the Olympic Games' scale is an unparalleled challenge, demanding the synchronized efforts of numerous stakeholders.
The global sports stage is set with Paris taking the baton for the 2024 Olympics this August, while Los Angeles has already secured its position as the host city for the 2028 Games, outshining its competitors in the bidding race. Brisbane's unchallenged bid in 2021 as the host for a future Olympics underscores the evolving dynamics of Olympic hosting bids.
India's journey towards becoming an Olympic host nation is not just about showcasing its sporting capabilities but also about weaving a narrative of ambition, collaboration, and global engagement. As the world watches, India's bold bid for the 2036 Olympics could mark a monumental chapter in the annals of international sports, heralding a new era of Olympic history.
