Story Highlights:

UFC releases a heavyweight contender after a victory at UFC Abu Dhabi, raising questions about the promotion’s direction.

The decision comes amid major changes in the heavyweight division, including Jon Jones’ retirement and Tom Aspinall’s return.

In a move that has caught many MMA fans off guard, UFC President Dana White and the promotion have decided to part ways with heavyweight fighter Martin Buday, despite his consistent performances and a solid winning record inside the Octagon. The decision comes on the heels of Buday’s most recent victory at UFC Abu Dhabi, where he secured a dominant unanimous decision over Marcus Buchecha.

A win that wasn’t enough

UFC Abu Dhabi lived up to expectations, delivering fireworks throughout the card and ending with Reinier de Ridder defeating Robert Whittaker in a headlining bout. However, buried beneath the evening’s headlines was a development that has left fans scratching their heads. Despite notching his seventh win in eight UFC appearances, Martin Buday will not be re-signed by the promotion.

According to MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, “The UFC has parted ways with Martin Buday following Buday’s UFC Abu Dhabi win over Marcus Buchecha. Buday fought out his deal, and the UFC elected not to re-sign the ranked heavyweight.”

The news, also confirmed by MMA reporter Guilherme Cruz (@guicruzzz), stunned many in the MMA community given Buday’s strong form and steady climb within the division.

A record that speaks for itself

Martin Buday, 33, exits the UFC with a commendable 7-1 record. Notably, his wins include a decision victory over former champion Andrei Arlovski, further proving that he could hang with experienced veterans of the sport. Riding a three-fight winning streak and having shown steady development in each outing, Buday’s release is not due to performance—but rather seems tied to broader strategic moves within the UFC.

A shift in heavyweight strategy?

The UFC’s heavyweight division is currently in transition. With Jon Jones’ retirement and interim champion Tom Aspinall set to return at UFC 321 in October, the organization appears to be opening space for fresh faces and new talent. While Buday never reached title contention, he was a reliable and increasingly dangerous name on the heavyweight roster. His exit underscores the volatility of UFC contracts and the fine line fighters walk even after wins.

Despite the abrupt nature of his release, Buday leaves the UFC with his head held high, having proven his worth repeatedly in the Octagon. His future in MMA remains promising, whether with another major promotion or a potential return down the line.
