Satender Malik, a wrestler who was taking part in the Commonwealth Games trials in the 125kg category, allegedly punched the judge of his match, after losing the bout.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhusan Saran Singh, who was present at the trails, immediately took action against him and suspended him for life, as informed to Sports Tak by assistant secretary Vinod Tomar.
Satender was losing his bout 3-0 when he got involved in a scuffle with the referee because of a decision that he felt was against him. In retaliation, the wrestler decided to take matters into his own hands and landed a major punch on the referee, much to the surprise of everyone at the KD Jadhav Stadium in New Delhi.
This is not the first time that such an incident has rocked the wrestling arena in India. In 2017, during trials of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, two-time Olympic medal winner Sushil Kumar's fans were embroiled in a tussle with his bitter rival Parveen Rana.
Sushil had won all his bouts and qualified for the Games. But things took a turn for the worse when Rana, after losing in the semifinal clash, claimed that the decorated wrestler's supporters beat him and his elder brother 'for daring to take the ring' against him.
Meanwhile, Sushil alleged that the supporters of Rana had threatened his life. Reacting to the fight, Sushil said that he condemns such behaviour, "It is very unfortunate and I condemn it. It is wrong, there is no space for such things in sports."
