Jannik Sinner, the defending champion at the Australian Open, brought laughter to the fans as he shared the details of his pre- and post-match routines during his on-court interview. After defeating Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to secure his spot in the second week, Sinner engaged in a light-hearted conversation with Jim Courier.

The relaxing pre-match routine

Sinner, known for his composed demeanour on the court, revealed that he enjoys relaxing before his matches, especially when he has a lot of free time. In a candid moment with Courier, the world number 1 explained that he values his sleep and tries to rest as much as possible before taking to the court.

“What’s a day in the life of Jannik Sinner like on match day?” Courier asked before Sinner responded with a chuckle. "Why is that funny?" asked Courier, curious about the Italian's reaction. Sinner laughed and pointed to his team in the player’s box, adding, “I’m watching part of my box there smiling, I don’t know why!"

Sinner continued, “Usually I’m quite relaxed until 20 minutes before the match. I try to sleep in as long as possible, which, I have no doubts I can do that every day.” This light-hearted admission left the audience in stitches.

Sinner's sleep routine

Sinner also surprised Courier by revealing the amount of sleep he gets before his matches. “I slept around 10 hours this night, which is good,” he shared, prompting a chuckle from Courier. The 54-year-old former champion responded with a joke: “Enjoy it while it lasts, my man. It doesn’t last!”

Sinner responded optimistically, “Everyone tells me that! So hopefully I can keep going.” He also mentioned that, before the match, he took another brief nap. “Half an hour before the match, again sleeping,” Sinner added. “But hopefully, I wake up when it counts, no?”

Post-match duties and recovery

After the match, Sinner has a busy schedule, including press duties and an ice bath for recovery. “Now [after the match] it’s quite long because we have to do press, we have to do ice bath. It’s all part of the job, and hopefully, I’m recovered for the most part,” he explained.

Sinner also joked about his late evening plans: “Today I arrived around 2.30 pm and I’m going to leave two hours from now, so 11.30 pm more or less, and then I’m back to bed.”

The young Italian, who is defending his first Grand Slam title, is doing so with poise and focus. He will face either Holger Rune or Miomir Kecmanovic in the next round as he continues his journey in Melbourne. So far, Sinner has been impressive, losing only one set in his first three rounds of the tournament.
