Team India succumbed to a six-wicket loss in a must win Super Four encounter against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 6) which has pushed them to the brink of Asia Cup 2022's ouster.
The result left India at the mercy of the other teams to have a chance of making it to the final. It also meant that India skipper Rohit Sharma's scintillating 41-ball 72 went in vain, as the islanders completed a chase of 174 with a ball to spare.
Needing 21 in 12 balls, Sri Lanka scored 14 runs off the penultimate over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, almost sealing it in their favour. India will be out of the tournament if Pakistan beat Afghanistan on Wednesday.
India bowlers are somehow lacking the steam despite India's decent show in the batting department.
Meanwhile former India explosive batter Virender Sehwag critically analysed India's fizzling bowling unit as he said that the Men in Blue's bowlers are not world class if they can't defent anything over 175.
"Indian bowlers are not world class if they can't defend anything over 175," Sehwag said in a conversation with Cricbuzz.
"India need to think where they are going wrong and how to better their bowling unit because 170-180 run isn't a small target to defend. And the kind of bowling India have, they can defend eight out of ten times," he further added.
Earlier, Rohit in a post match presentation said,"I was happy with three seamers. Unfortunately Avesh hasn’t turned up well in the fitness tests. He didn’t respond well because he was quite sick. Ideally the combination we would play is four seamers, but three seamers was something we wanted to try before the World Cup".
“We need to find answers as a team, like where we are with five bowlers. We know now where we stand with this combination,” he added.
Rohit rued that his side was 10-15 runs short while batting,“ he added.
