During the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India captain Rohit Sharma posed with the Champions Trophy. The Mumbai Cricket Association organized a spectacular celebration that was attended by the cricketing titans of Mumbai, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri. Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri are seen pleading with Rohit Sharma to get closer to the Champions Trophy in a video that is going viral on the internet. The India captain graciously turned down their invitation, though, so the seniors could take centre stage. The coveted trophy was right in front of Sachin Tendulkar, Shastri, and Gavaskar, while Rohit was positioned at the far left of the stage.
Rohit on Champions Trophy
Though he hinted at possible celebrations in Mumbai, Rohit could not conceal his ambitions when he said that he and his squad would do everything in their power to bring the Champions Trophy back to the Wankhede Stadium. Notably, India held a bus parade in Mumbai's Marine Drive to celebrate their victory in the T20 World Cup last year. At the Wankhede Stadium, a magnificent felicitation celebration marked the parade's conclusion.
"We will embark on another tournament. I am sure when we reach Dubai, the wishes of 140 crore people will be behind us, we know that. We will try and do everything we can to bring this trophy back here to the Wankhede," Rohit said during the ceremony in Wankhede Stadium
Rohit Sharma was announced as the captain of India's 15-man Champions Trophy team. Along with players like Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami. Shubman Gill was appointed the team's vice-captain. On Saturday, January 18, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, made the team announcement in Mumbai.
On February 20, India will play Bangladesh in Dubai to start their Champions Trophy campaign. On February 23, they will play Pakistan. On March 2, India will play New Zealand in their final group match. It is possible that this could be Rohit's final ICC event. The captain of India did not make the 2011 World Cup squad. However, he was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team. He was a member of the team captained by MS Dhoni that won the Champions Trophy in England in 2013. The Champions Trophy was last won by Pakistan, the tournament's host, who defeated India in the 2017 London final.
