Dinesh Karthik set to make cricket comeback after World Cup, named captain of this side for Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023

India's veteran batter Dinesh Karthik, who is currently commentating in the ongoing ODI World Cup, is set to return to cricket field after the conclusion of the showpiece event. He will be seen captaining Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is scheduled to be played from November 23. The wicket-keeper batter is currently part of the commentary panel for the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, but he will return to the field after his stint as a broadcaster ends.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association made the announcement on Thursday, November 9.

Karthik last played for Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, and he would be hoping to make a big statement this time around. The 37-year-old has been a veteran for Tamil Nadu in the domestic circuit, and he has a wealth of experience to draw on.

Dinesh Karthik last played competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year. He was part of the Indian T20 team but was not selected after the T20 World Cup 2022. Karthik also had a disappointing IPL season this year. The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023 will be a good chance for him to regain his form and rhythm ahead of the IPL 2024. Karthik has been a consistent performer for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. He has played 252 List A matches and scored 7358 runs, including 12 centuries and 39 fifties.

Karthik, who is doing commentary in the World Cup, expressed his desire to see India and Pakistan in the semifinals.

“India vs Pakistan definitely. I want that as the semi-final. I am manifesting that to happen, let’s see. India vs Pakistan in Kolkata is going to be mouth-watering contest,” he told Cricbuzz.

India have already secured a spot in the semi-finals and will finish top of the group. Pakistan, on the other hand, have a slim chance of qualifying. They need New Zealand to lose to Sri Lanka and then beat England by a large margin, which is unlikely. Pakistan need to pull off something extraordinary to make it through.
