Jason Roy’s agony on the field after injury reminds of the Euro 2016 final where Portugal star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was inconsolable as he was taken off the field on a stretcher. At the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, we witnessed similar scenes as Roy went down after injuring his left calf while taking a single. It seemed like Roy instantly knew that his time in the tournament is almost over.

Roy was taken off the field by the medical staff. He was not even able to limp off the field and put his hands around shoulders of the physio and teammate Tom Curran. Afterwards, in the dugout, he was seen crying and trying to hide his face.

In death overs when his team was struggling Roy was animated. The in-form opener was batting on 20 off 15 deliveries when the injury cut-short his stay on the crease. After England’s 10-run loss to South Africa, he walked out to shake hands with Proteas players with the help of a crutch.

“Obviously, Jason Roy going down the way he did does hurt, but we still did well to get that close... Probably Jason will be assessed tomorrow,” skipper Eoin Morgan said in the post-match presentation.

With the looks of it, Roy is unlikely to recover in time for their semi-final clash. In the 31-year-old’s absence, either Jonny Bairstow or Dawid Malan will get promoted to open the innings alongside Jos Buttler.
