West Indies beat defending champions England by seven runs in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. This is the first time West Indies have beaten England at a Women’s World Cup. There was one point in the game when the defending champions needed just nine runs to win the match from 18 balls but West Indies bowlers picked up two quick wickets to cut short their run chase.
Batting first, West Indies had registered a respectable total of 225 runs for the loss of six wickets. Their opening pair started the batting on a positive note and notched a healthy partnership of 81 runs but later a batting order collapse saw them lose 4 wickets in a matter of just 17 runs.
Later, West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Shemaine Campbelle (66 runs off 80 balls) and Chedean Nation (49 runs not out off 74 balls) registered a vital partnership of 123 runs off 138 balls to help their side recover from three quick wickets. Eventually, they managed to reach a total of 225 runs at University Oval, Dunedin.
For England, their left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone picked up three wickets conceding just 20 runs in 10 overs. The three wickets she took came in the 21st over. Apart from Ecclestone, Nat Sciver claimed the wicket of Campbelle.
In reply, the defending champions lost their first wicket for the score of 31. Their opening batter Tammy Beaumont scored 46 runs off 76 balls. At one point, the defending champions were struggling at 94 for five but Danni Wyatt (33 runs off 31 balls) and Sophia Dunkley (38 runs off 35 balls) exhibited a good batting show in order to keep the run chase alive but eventually their efforts turned out to be futile.
West Indies bowler Anisa Mohammed came to bowl the 48th over with just nine runs to defend. But on the first ball of 48th over, England’s Kate Cross went back to the dressing room and on the fourth ball of the over Anisa dismissed Anya Shrubsole to secure a historic victory for her side and pull off tournament's first upset.
Ecclestone remained stranded on the other end as Caribbean bowlers mopped up the tail in the penultimate over. She remained not out for 33 runs off 41 deliveries.
With two back-to-back defeats in the World Cup, the defending champions are currently placed at sixth position on the points table. West Indies, on the other hand, are at second spot after winning their first two games.
