Former India captain and batting legend, Virender Sehwag analysed India's performance and listed two major reasons behind the team's loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. Sehwag opined that the exclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin from the playing XI and poor batting performance led to India's downfall. The former skipper also underlined the need for building a proper mindset and approach when it comes to winning championships.
"Congratulations to Australia on winning the #WTCFinal. They are the deserved winners. India lost it in their minds when they decided to exclude Ashwin against a left-handed heavy attack. Plus the top order needed to bat better. Need to have better mindset and approach to win championships," Sehwag said in Tweet.
India's hopes of winning another ICC trophy came to a screeching halt after Australia thumped Rohit Sharma & Co. in the 2023 WTC final at the Oval on June 11 (Sunday). India ended up losing the summit clash by a huge margin of 209 runs. As a result, the wait for another ICC title elongated further for India.
Australia were the better team throughout the five days of the Test match as India fell behind the eight ball on the opening day of the final. From thereon, India was playing catch up but their dream of a miracle win came to an end after yet another batting collapse. Rohit & Co. were comprehensively beaten as they sustained a massive 209-run defeat in the Ultimate Test. Dejection gripped a country of over 1.4 billion people after India faltered in a crunch game once again.
India last won an ICC trophy in 2013 when MS Dhoni-led India reigned supreme in the Champions Trophy in England. Since then, it has been heartbreak and dejection for India in ICC tournaments. India missed a golden opportunity to become the first team to win all major ICC tournaments. India's failure meant Australia succeeded in securing the record and bragging rights.
