India's batting superstar Virat Kohli's disappointing outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy continued on Day 2 of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 4, Saturday. Virat Kohli was dismissed early in his innings, edging an outside off-stump delivery from Scott Boland to the slip fielders.
Virat Kohli's off-stump horror continues
Earlier, the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian team had successfully bowled out Australia for 181 runs in the first innings. Debutant Beau Webster played a crucial role for the home team, scoring his maiden Test half-century.
In reply, India got off to a decent start in their second innings, but a series of quick wickets allowed Australia to regain momentum.
But Australia got their biggest wicket of the day in Virat Kohli, who got dismissed in the 14th over of India's second innings. Scott Boland, unleashing a similar delivery to the one that dismissed Kohli in the first innings, bowled an outside off-stump delivery which earned him the prized wicket again. Despite having the option to leave the ball, Kohli poked at it with hard hands and Steve Smith did the rest by completing a straightforward catch at second slip.

Kohli was visibly upset with his dismissal as he was seen screaming in anger and punching his fist on his thigh and before leaving the field in frustration. The 36-year-old batter scored only 6 runs off 12 balls, leaving India at a precarious 59/3 in their second innings. Kohli's wife Anushka Sharma, watching from the stands, was also dejected by her husband's dismissal. India ended the Day 2's play at 141/6 with Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja still intact on the crease.
Notably, this was the fourth time in this series that Boland hunted down Kohli.
Kohli's dismissal in the second innings followed a recurring pattern. For the seventh time in eight innings, he fell victim to a delivery outside the off-stump. In the first innings of this match, he edged a ball from Scott Boland to the slips, departing after scoring 17 runs off 69 balls.
This series has been particularly challenging for Kohli, who has a great track record in Australian conditions. Despite a strong start with a century in Perth, he struggled to find his mojo back. His next highest score was 36 runs, and he managed to reach double figures only three times throughout the series. Overall, Kohli finished the series with 190 runs at an average of 23.75 from nine innings.
On the other hand, Scott Boland, who dismissed Kohli in both innings, picked his 18th wickets in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 at an impressive average of under 19.
