Varun Aaron lavished praise on Washington Sundar for gritty fifty in fifth Test

Sundar played a fiery knock of 53 runs from 46 deliveries on Day 3

Former India cricketer Varun Aaron was left very impressed with Washington Sundar's brilliant knock of 53 runs during the third day of Oval Test against England. After the Men in Blue had lost nine wickets for 357 runs, Sundar shifted gears and started hammering the opposing bowlers. He formed an important 39-run stand with Prasidh Krishna where the latter didn't score a single run while Sundar played a highly-important inning to help the visitors in posting a target of 374.

Sundar has been superb with the bat against England

Sundar, who is yet to bowl in the fifth Test, has been fantastic with the bat for India in the series. Previously, his unbeaten knock of 101 in the Manchester Test had played a crucial role in the Men in Blue pulling off a hard-fought draw. He has contributed well with both the bat and the ball in the England assignment, scoring 284 runs and picking up seven wickets.

Aaron pointed out that Sundar's performance with the bat has only gotten better with every chance that he has gotten in the series. He also highlighted the importance of the boundaries that Sundar scored by the end of India's second innings at The Oval. Notably, the left-hander's knock of 53 included four boundaries and sixes each.

“Washington Sundar is showing so many levels to his game, whether it's saving a Test match for India or accelerating towards the end with the tail. He's gotten very important wickets as well," Aaron said on JioHotstar.

"Washington has had one of the better Test series, and that's because he's gotten chance after chance. The moment you give a player security, this is what you get. That flourish towards the end was brilliant, he's putting up some very important runs, like getting 50s on the back of 100s from the previous game," he added.

Meanwhile, England finished the third day on 50/1 with Zak Crawley losing his wicket to Mohammed Siraj on the final delivery. India continued to bowl well on the fourth day as Prasidh Krishna got the massive wicket of Ben Duckett for 54 runs during the ninth over of the day. England captain Ollie Pope would lose his wicket soon after for 27 runs as Siraj got his second scalp of the innings. However, a late flurry of boundaries from Harry Brook saw the hosts end the first session on 164/3. While Joe Root is currently unbeaten on 23, Brook is going strong on 38 and the Indian bowlers need to find a way to break this partnership as soon as they can.
