The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 is gearing up to lure cricket fans around the world, which kicks off in Chennai on March 22. The IPL 2024’s initial schedule has been announced for 17 days. The dates were disclosed only for the first 21 matches as the rest of the schedule will be announced later.
The opening match of the IPL 2024 will be played between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22.

IPL 2008 Champions: Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were the finalists in the inaugural IPL season in 2008. RR defeated CSK by three wickets in Mumbai in the title clash to become the first champion in IPL history.
Suresh Raina was the highest scorer for the Super Kings with 43 runs, while Yusuf Pathan from RR took three wickets for 22 runs. Despite a patchy start, the Royals managed to win the match in the last over. This victory helped them clinch the 2008 IPL title. Pathan, who performed exceptionally well for RR with both bat and ball, was named the ‘man of the match’.
IPL 2009 Champions: Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six runs in the 2009 match in Johannesburg.
Anil Kumble-led RCB won the toss and chose to field first. The Chargers scored 143 runs in 20 overs, losing 6 wickets. Herschelle Gibbs top-scored for the Chargers with 53 runs. Kumble took four wickets for 16 runs.
IPL 2010 Champions: Chennai Super Kings
The 2010 IPL final took place between CSK and Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 25, 2010, at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. The Super Kings won by 22 runs.
Under the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar, the MI finished first in the group stage with 10 wins in 14 matches. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni-led CSK secured the third position with seven wins in 14 matches. They beat the RCB and the Chargers in the semi-finals.

IPL 2011 Champions: Chennai Super Kings
The 2011 IPL final was played between CSK and RCB at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Defending champions CSK won the match by 58 runs. This win also made CSK the first team to win the IPL more than once.
Daniel Vettori-led RCB finished on top of the group stage table with 19 points in 14 matches, while CSK secured the second position with just one point less than RCB.
IPL 2012 Champions: Kolkata Knight Riders
In 2012, KKR lifted the trophy after a five-wicket win over CSK in Chennai.
Manvinder Bisla from KKR was named the ‘man of the match’ in the final. Sunil Narine, also from KKR, was awarded the title of the ‘most valuable player’ of the tournament. Mandeep Singh from Kings XI Punjab was recognised as the emerging player of the season for the 2012 IPL.
IPL 2013 Champions: Mumbai Indians
The 2013 IPL was played between CSK and MI in 2013 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Mumbai defeated Chennai by 23 runs, attributed to Kieron Pollard's unbeaten innings of 60 runs from 32 balls, which earned him the ‘man of the match’ award.
This was also the last match in which Mumbai's Sachin Tendulkar played as an IPL cricketer, although he was sidelined due to injury. He announced his retirement from the IPL after the match concluded.

IPL 2014 Champions: Kolkata Knight Riders
Reigning champions KKR have defeated Kings XI Punjab by three wickets in 2014 in Bangalore.
KKR chose to field after winning the toss. KXIP scored 199/4 in 20 overs. KKR chased the target successfully, scoring the required runs with three balls left and losing seven wickets. This victory marked their second IPL title win.
IPL 2015 Champions: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai secured their second IPL title with a 41-run victory over Chennai, marking their third appearance in an IPL final. Mumbai's captain Rohit Sharma received the ‘man of the match’ award for his innings of 50. The final match was sold out, with an attendance of approximately 67,000 spectators.
IPL 2016 Champions: Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) earned the IPL title in 2016. SRH chose to bat first after winning the toss, scoring a formidable 208/7 in their 20 overs. RCB, needing 209 to win, could only reach 200/7 in their allotted overs, falling short of their target. SRH won the match by eight runs.
RCB’s Virat Kohli was honoured as the ‘most valuable player’ of the tournament.
IPL 2017 Champions: Mumbai Indians
In the 2017 IPL, MI faced off against the Rising Pune Supergiant in Hyderabad. Mumbai, competing in their fourth IPL final, clinched their third title by defeating Pune by a narrow margin of 1 run. Krunal Pandya of Mumbai was named the ‘man of the match’ for his innings of 47. The final match drew a full house, with an attendance of 34,158 spectators.
IPL 2018 Champions: Chennai Super Kings
MS Dhoni led the CSK to their third IPL title in 2018. Chennai won against SRH by eight wickets in the final clash in Mumbai.
SRH posted a total of 178/6 in 20 overs against CSK. Skipper Kane Williamson was the top scorer for Hyderabad with a 36-ball 47, followed by Yusuf Pathan who scored an unbeaten 45 runs off 25 balls, and Carlos Brathwaite with 21 runs off 11 balls. Lungi Ngidi, Karn Sharma, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja each took a wicket for Chennai.
IPL 2019 Champions: Mumbai Indians
MI secured their fourth IPL title by defeating CSK by just one run at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad in 2019.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, MI posted a total of 149 runs for eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs, with Kieron Pollard being the top scorer with 41 runs. Chennai's bowler Deepak Chahar took three wickets during MI's innings. MI's Jasprit Bumrah was named the ‘player of the match’ for his impressive performance, taking two wickets for 14 runs in his four overs.
IPL 2020 Champions: Mumbai Indians
The 2020 season marked the thirteenth edition of the IPL. Defending champions MI successfully retained their title with a five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in the final on November 10, 2020.
DC chose to bat first and scored 156/7 and MI comfortably chased down the target.
IPL 2021 Champions: Chennai Super Kings
CSK clinched their fourth IPL title by defeating KKR by 27 runs in the final match in Dubai. Ruturaj Gaikwad emerged as the leading run-scorer in the tournament, while Harshal Patel claimed the highest number of wickets and also secured the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award.
IPL 2022 Champions: Gujarat Titans
The Gujarat Titans (GT) beat RR by seven wickets to win their maiden title in their very first season in Ahmedabad.
RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bat first against the GT. Royals managed to score 130 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In pursuit of the target of 131 runs, the GT successfully chased it down, scoring 133 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in just 18.1 overs.
IPL 2023 Champions: Chennai Super Kings
In the 2023 final, CSK secured their fifth league title after defeating GT by five wickets in Ahmedabad.
GT posted a mammoth 214/4 before rain interrupted the match, which was then shortened to 15 overs. Chasing 171 runs from 15 overs, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway made a strong start for CSK. Chennai managed to score 171/5 in 15 overs. The revised rules also reduced the powerplay to four overs and limited bowlers to three overs each.
