Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started off slow by picking Ajinkya Rahane for Rs 50 lakh but dug deep into their pockets to get England Test captain Ben Stokes in their side. Stokes, a future captaincy prospect for the franchise, was picked for Rs 16.25 crores as multiple franchises wanted the all-rounder's services.
After the big buy, CSK had their eyes on Former Under-19 World Cup-winners Shaik Rasheed and Nishant Sindhu. Also, they got New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson for a steal deal of Rs 1 crore as no other franchise was interested to bid for him.
The four-time IPL winners have lifted the coveted prize in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. It was a poor tournament for the Chennai-based franchise last time round, where they lost 10 of their 14 matches and finished the tournament second from the bottom.
Before the IPL 2023 auction, CSK retained only 14 players in the squad from the previous season. One of the vital cogs in many of their successful campaigns, Dwayne Bravo, announced his retirement earlier in 2022. He will now take up the mantle of bowling coaching in the upcoming season of the IPL.
