In the 16th season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been in incredible form. He became the latest centurion of the season, smashing a brilliant ton against the Mumbai Indians (MI) off just 53 balls.
This was following his exceptional half-century against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) where he played a blistering innings of 77 runs off 43 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes. His powerful knock was well appreciated, with fans on social media now comparing him to former India stalwart Virender Sehwag.
In a recent exclusive interview with his childhood coach Jwala Singh, he revealed what made him an explosive batter after what was an ordinary IPL 2020 season, the result of which is being seen these days.
Runs rained in the Under-19 World Cup as well
In the 2020 U-19 World Cup, Team India had to face defeat against Bangladesh in the final match. Yashasvi Jaiswal was playing the role of opener in this team India and also played an innings of 88 runs in 121 balls in the final match. In total, he smashed 400 runs in 6 matches of the tournament. On the basis of his performance, RR bought him for their team during the IPL 2020 season, paying Rs 2.4 crores. However, in the first IPL season, he could not leave a mark and could score only 40 runs in three matches.
An ordinary IPL debut for Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal has so far scored 428 runs in nine matches for Rajasthan in IPL 2023. This is already more than his 249 in IPL 2021 and his 258 in IPL 2022.
Talking about his batting, his coach Jwala Singh told Sports Tak in a conversation, "When he came to India after playing the U-19 World Cup, then he was selected in the IPL. He was nothing special in his first IPL season. Then I understood what was the problem with Yashasvi. After that, he came back to me and we made a separate training plan for the next season."
His special training before IPL 2021
After IPL 2020, Yashasvi went to his coach Jwala Singh and trained hard with him. On this, his coach said, "Yashasvi's game was slow in the first IPL season. I understood this, then I started preparing him to play fast. Before the 2021 IPL season, I trained Yashasvi in the month of October or November. Gave him the practice of hitting plastic balls on a cement pitch.
"I told Yashasvi that you have to hit every single ball and bat aggressively. Yashasvi was also nervous about this but I told him to have faith and he Came out as an explosive batsman. After that training, Yashasvi has been doing well in the IPL. The result is there and I am very happy with his batting," he added.
Treated him like my own son
Recalling Yashasvi's early days, Jwala Singh concluded, "When he used to play at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, I caught sight of him, then I came to know about his financial condition, so I took him to me in the year 2013. Brought him. I nurtured him in cricket and for him, I am not only a coach but also a parent. He is like my son. I give him only one mantra the biggest key to success in cricket is consistency. Jaiswal is just 25 runs away from 1000 IPL runs and can achieve this feat faster than the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and even Suresh Raina! In 32 games, he has smashed 975 runs in total.
