After a poor show in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the Mumbai Indians (MI) will be raring to go in 2023, if they can work around the injuries that have afflicted them ahead of the mega event. They are the most successful IPL team in the history of the tournament and will look to come back strong after finishing 10th in the 2022 season.

This season will be a test of their bowling depth, with the injuries to Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson. Their spin department also feels light with Piyush Chawla being their only frontline spinner so the onus will be on how their bowling coach Shane Bond navigates the team through this crisis, especially with the return of Jofra Archer.

Mumbai Indians and their greatest strengths

Despite their misgivings in the bowling department, their batting unit oozes both class and power-hitting. Bolstered by the arrival of all-rounder Cameron Green for Rs 17.5 Crores, they now seem loaded in that department. Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan will join Rohit Sharma at the top of the batting order, with Tim David and Tristan Stubbs among the foreign batters who will add fire to their fuel.

But the return of Archer will be their biggest plus point. Previously with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) Archer was brought in by MI to partner Bumrah among their frontline bowlers but his injury in 2022 followed by Bumrah's in 2023 has wreaked havoc on the side's plans for the future. In Bumrah's absence, Archer will be expected to shoulder the bowling of MI, but the addition of the experienced Jason Behrendorff will help ease the burden as Archer will look to add to his 46 wickets in 35 matches.

Mumbai Indians will kickstart their season against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday, April 2, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
