India's mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s fitness is a cause of concern for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup which begins from October 17. The board is keeping a close watch on the in-form spinner’s condition. Giving an update on the Tamil Nadu spinner’s problematic knees, the board has revealed that they aren’t in the greatest of conditions and their first priority will be to get the KKR star bowler in shape. The focus will be on Varun’s pain management during the T20 World Cup, the source was quoted as saying to PTI.

The mystery spinner’s dodgy knees are being monitored by his franchise’s medical team and the BCCI is in touch with them. An extensive strength and conditioning chart for Varun has been prepared by the KKR support staff and he is given painkiller injections for him to bowl his four overs without much difficulty.

Meanwhile, former Indian bowler Ajit Agarkar had advised the selectors to stick with the original squad they picked for the upcoming T20 World Cup and go with the changes only if injury is induced in the selected squad. While this might not be a good news for Varun, it might appear to be a small ray of hope for leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has found his mojo back in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 with a brilliant show.

Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh is still hoping to see Chahal feature in the quadrennial event. The veteran cricketer reacting to a tweet from Chahal said,

“You have given your best as always…keep it up.. and make sure you keep bowling the right pace…Not too slow OK…still hoping to see you in team India for T20 World Cup...Champion Bowler.”

While Varun’s condition will be consistently monitored, the board will have the provision to make changes in the Indian squad till October 10 if the situation persists.
