Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell of Punjab Kings walks back as game stops due to rain during the 2025 IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 26, 2025.

Story Highlights:

Glenn Maxwell has represented four franchises in his IPL career.

Maxwell left midway through IPL 2025 after suffering an injury.

Weeks after Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises announced their list of retained and released players ahead of the mini-auction, two veteran players – Faf du Plessis and Andre Russell – announced their retirement for the league. Du Plessis aims to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) whereas Russell has been roped back in by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their ‘power coach’. A day after Russell’s announcement, T20 legend Glenn Maxwell’s name was missing from the list of 1,355 players who registered for the mini-auction set to be held on December 15.

Maxwell was released by Punjab Kings (PBKS) as he had a forgettable season before an injury ruled him out. He was replaced by young Australian teammate Mitchell Owen in the franchise.

“Love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last year we weren’t able to get the best out of him,” PBKS head coach Ponting told Star Sports when they released Maxwell.

“Looking ahead to this season, we didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team, so we decided to release him,” Ponting added.

Maxwell’s 2 disappointing seasons

Before rejoining PBKS, he had played four season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In IPL 2024, he scored just 52 runs from nine innings.

He has crossed the 500-run mark in an IPL season twice in his career. The last time he did it was for RCB in IPL 2021. Apart from PBKS and RCB, he played two seasons for Delhi Capitals (DC) and one for Mumbai Indians (MI).

Maxwell won the IPL with Mumbai Indians

Overall, he has played 141 games in an IPL career that spanned 14 seasons. He has scored 2,819 runs from 135 innings at an average of 23.88 and strike rate of 155.14. He has 18 fifties in the IPL. With the ball, he has 41 wickets at an average of 34.46. He was part of the MI squad that won the IPL in 2013.

Maxwell’s recent outing

A few months ago, Maxwell suffered a wrist injury. After undergoing surgery, he was ruled out of New Zealand series and a few games against India. He made just one appearance in T20I series against Suryakumar Yadav-led side where he was dismissed for a single-digit score by Varun Chakaravarthy.

He will come to India next year for the T20 World Cup 2026.
