Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining slow over rate during the clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 13. In their first clash of the season in Delhi, DC took well over 15 minutes to complete the first innings.
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs," the IPL media release read.
DC exceeded the time despite spinners bowling 10 overs in the innings. After Ryan Rickelton's 25-ball 41 and Suryakumar Yadav's 28-ball 40, Tilak Varma's 33-ball 59 helped MI post 205/5. Naman Dhir was impressive in the slog overs as he scored 38 runs from just 17 balls.
In the run chase, impact player Karun Nair scored 89 runs from just 40 balls on his Indian Premier League (IPL) return. He shared a 119-run partnership for the second wicket with Abishek Porel who scored 33 runs from 25 balls. After Nair departed in the 12th over, DC middle-order failed to carry on and suffered a batting collapse. DC were bowled out for 193 in 19 overs as they lost by 12 runs.
What Axar said after defeat?
After the first defeat of the season, Patel rued soft dismissals. However, he does not want to overthink the defeat. The all-rounder lauded Kuldeep Yadav who has been in sensational form so far.
"We had the game in the bag. Some soft dismissals and bad shots in the middle order. You can't leave it to the batters in the lower order everytime. Don't need to overthink, just one of those days. Was happy at the halfway stage. The ball was stopping initially but it got better. And then dew helped us further. Out of our three spinners, two can bowl in powerplay and death as well. Kuldeep is bowling unbelievably well. Need to forget this game from a batting point of view," he said in the post-match presentation.
DC's net run rate (NRR) took a hit and they slipped to the second position, below Gujarat TItans (GT). Their next match is at home as well against Sanju Samson's Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 16.
