DC and RR are also in playoffs contention

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have finally broken their losing streak, securing a crucial win after enduring six consecutive defeats in the Indian Premier League 2026. Walking into the contest against Lucknow Super Giants, the franchise faced a strict must-win scenario with their playoff aspirations hanging entirely in the balance. By clinching the win, PBKS has successfully kept their postseason dreams alive and solidified their position in a fiercely competitive top-four race that also features the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

PBKS, KKR, RR's playoff contention scenario

As the league stage reaches its climax, Rajasthan Royals find themselves in pole position to lock down the remaining playoff spot. Currently sitting on 14 points, the Royals know that a victory in their highly anticipated final league match against the Mumbai Indians will elevate them to 16 points, guaranteeing their entry into the business end of the tournament regardless of other outcomes.

Meanwhile, PBKS have finished their league commitments with 15 points and a healthy Net Run Rate of +0.31, which is notably superior to Kolkata's NRR of +0.11. Because of this, Punjab's primary hope rests on a Mumbai Indians victory over Rajasthan. If the Royals lose, and Delhi Capitals manage to defeat KKR in their final match, Punjab Kings will comfortably coast straight into the playoffs.

The equation becomes slightly more complicated if KKR triumphs over Delhi, as a victory would leave Kolkata level with Punjab on 15 points. For the Knight Riders to leapfrog PBKS into the top four, they would not only need the Mumbai Indians to upset the Rajasthan Royals, but they would also have to win by a large enough margin to overtake Punjab's superior Net Run Rate.

Shreyas Iyer-inspired PBKS' emphatic win over LSG

Talking about the match, that would ultimately decide their IPL 2026 playoff destiny, LSG put to bat first after losing the toss. However, they endured a disastrous start to their innings, losing top-order batters Arshin Kulkarni and Nicholas Pooran in quick succession. Ayush Badoni then provided a spectacular counter-attack, injecting life back into the innings with a blistering 43 off just 18 deliveries before his entertaining cameo was cut short. Following the early wickets, Josh Inglis and Rishabh Pant joined forces to stabilize the middle overs, constructing a vital 65-run partnership. Even after Pant's dismissal, Inglis kept his foot on the accelerator, continuing his aggressive onslaught against the bowlers. The Australian batsman top-scored for his side, anchoring the innings with a brilliant 72 off 44 balls, a knock decorated with nine boundaries and two towering sixes.

Abdul Samad then provided the perfect finishing touch at the death, playing a whirlwind cameo of 37 runs from just 20 deliveries. His late-innings fireworks propelled the side to a highly competitive total of 196 for six at the end of their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing a daunting target, PBKS got off to an equally disastrous start, suffering the early departures of openers Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly. With the team under immense pressure, skipper Shreyas Iyer paired up with Prabhsimran Singh to stage a magnificent rescue act. The duo completely shifted the momentum of the game, dismantling the opposition bowling attack during a massive 140-run partnership that came off just 76 deliveries. Although Prabhsimran eventually departed after a superb 69, Shreyas carried on with unyielding momentum. The captain anchored the chase to perfection, finishing unbeaten on 101 to register his maiden IPL century. It was a flawless captain's knock that guided PBKS to a resounding seven-wicket victory with two full overs to spare, keeping their playoffs dreams alive.
