Virat Kohli, Musheer Khan

Virat Kohli signals to teammate as Musheer Khan takes guard during IPL 2025 Qualifier 1.

Story Highlights:

Musheer Khan made his IPL debut as impact player in the Qualifier 1 game.

Virat Kohli was surprised to see Musheer make his IPL debut.

Musheer was not in Punjab Kings' original plan but collapse led to his debut.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Qualifier 1, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Virat Kohli was surprised to see Punjab Kings' (PBKS) Musheer Khan making his debut. Musheer was PBKS' 'waterboy' but the collapse led to him walking out at no.8 in the ninth over. Kohli was seen saying 'Ye paani pilata hai (He was serving water...)' as he was standing at slips. The video led to Kohli's criticism on social media. However, former India pacer Atul Wassan has said that it is just Kohli's competitive nature and he would want to win even if he is playing against his son.

“Virat has a competitive nature; even if he plays with his own baby, he would like to win. One should not feel bad about it. When you are playing the game, consider yourself equal, and don't expect an inch, nor give an inch,” Wassan said on the OTTplay's ‘Bails and Banter’ show.

Wassan on sleding without crossing the line

Kohli is known for getting under the opponent's skin. While the comment was made as the RCB opener was gobsmacked, Wassan said that sledging within the line is fine.

“If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. If someone is doing it within the line, it's fine. Sledging is a mixture of sarcasm, wit and being obnoxious,” said Wassan.

“Of course, there should be no physical confrontation, but certain gestures should not be misinterpreted, which entirely depends on the match officials. You have to let people express themselves within the limits,” he added.

No runs for Musheer, PBKS' another chance for final

Musheer failed under pressure. He did not score a single run and was dismissed lbw by leg-spinner Suyash Sharma. PBKS were bowled out for 101. RCB lost two wickets including Kohli in the run chase. But, Phil Salt's unbeaten half-century helped RCB get over the line in just 10 overs.

Musheer is unlikely to get a chance in the Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on June 1. Meanwhile, Kohli is gearing up for his fourth IPL final. The winner between MI and PBKS will go up against RCB at the same venue on June 3.
