Batting maestro Rohit Sharma has already made his mark as India captain in the limited-overs format having led them to historic T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 title triumph. Not just this, he also steered Team India to ODI World Cup 2023 final, which they eventually lost to Australia. Much of the Indian team's success under his leadership has been attributed to their newly adopted aggressive approach. Rohit has now shared that he made a conscious decision to alter his own mindset five years prior, following World Cup 2019.
It's about winning games, it's about winning trophies, it's about winning tournaments: Rohit Sharma
During the ODI World Cup 2019 Rohit Sharma notched a remarkable feat by scoring five centuries, a record that still stands for the most hundreds in a single edition of the showpiece tournament.
Recently, in a conversation with Michael Clarke on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, Rohit explained that India's semifinal exit from the World Cup 2019, despite his individual success, led him to believe that those runs were ultimately insignificant. It was from that point onwards that his perspective shifted. He came to the realization that securing victories and winning trophies were the ultimate measures of success.
"It's about winning games, it's about winning trophies, it's about winning tournaments - That is one thing I realised in 2019 WC, I scored 5 Hundreds but we lost in Semis - sat on the flight next day and thinking those runs are no use - since then my mindset changed," Rohit said in the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast with Michael Clarke.
During the same conversation, Rohit Sharma also said that since assuming the captaincy of the Indian team, he has felt the importance of the entire squad adopting a unified mindset, where individual achievements take a backseat to the collective goal. He stressed that the players should focus on making contributions that prioritise the team's objectives above personal milestones.
"Since I've started Captaining the Indian team, I felt not just me but the rest of the guys needs to also think alike, try and put the team first and do what is necessary for the team and not worry too much about my runs, my scores, my Hundreds, my 5 wickets," Rohit concluded.
Rohit is currently busy in playing IPL 2025, but he is far from his best in the ongoing season. Talking about Rohit's performance in the ongoing IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians' former captain, in a total of five matches, has scored just 56 runs at an average of 11.20. He will next be seen in action in MI's next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 17.
