LSG suffered a 54-run defeat against MI in their IPL 2025 clash

This was LSG's fifth defeat in the ongoing IPL 2025 season

Captain Rishabh Pant admitted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were no match for Mumbai Indians (MI) after their massive defeat in their IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede stadium on April 27.

MI notched a comprehensive 54-run win over LSG to register their fifth consecutive victory in the ongoing season, propelling them to the second position on the IPL 2025 points table. On the other hand, LSG suffered their fifth defeat of the season, significantly impacting their chances of qualifying for the playoffs.

MI posted a daunting total of 215/7, built on brilliant centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav. Opening batsman Ryan Rickelton provided an explosive start with a rapid 58 runs off just 32 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav continued his outstanding form with another pivotal innings, scoring 58 runs off 28 deliveries and becoming the current leading run-scorer of the season. Useful cameos from Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch further boosted MI's total beyond the 200-run mark. In response, LSG faced an early setback, losing their in-form batter Aiden Markram within the powerplay. While Nicholas Pooran (27), Mitchell Marsh (34), and Ayush Badoni (35) showed glimpses of resistance with aggressive hitting, they were unable to convert their starts into substantial scores. The remainder of the LSG batting order struggled to build partnerships, and the Mumbai Indians bowlers consistently took wickets to maintain control. Will Jacks picked up two crucial wickets, dismissing both Pooran and Rishabh Pant, while Trent Boult contributed with three wickets. However, the standout performer with the ball was Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered a brilliant spell, claiming four wickets and playing a key role in securing the emphatic victory for the Mumbai Indians by a significant margin.

Notably, this is the seventh instance in IPL history that MI have recorded five or more consecutive wins. Historically, they have gone on to win the tournament on four out of the six previous occasions they achieved such a winning streak prior to IPL 2025.

Rishabh Pant rues LSG's 54-run defeat against MI

After the match, Rishabh Pant strongly defended his decision to bowl first and backed LSG's batting. He also didn't shy away from mentioning that MI played better cricket than them and deserves all the credit.

[Bowling first] It was the right decision for us, we back our batting. We want to give the bowlers the best conditions, but today was not our day. The other team is also playing good cricket, and you have to give them credit instead of questioning ourselves. But we can figure it out because we have a break. [Batting at No. 4] I am not thinking about it too much. In a season like this you can start questioning yourself and I don't want to do that. Every time you take out that induvial is not the right thing to do. [On Mayank] It was good to see him coming back. He is getting into his rhythm. Hopeful he becomes better and better," Pant said at the post-match presentation.

LSG will next take on Punjab Kings on April 4 while MI will lock horns with Rajasthan Royals on May 1.
