IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Funds left in purse, number of players needed, which players will be on several teams' list?

Going into the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, Punjab Kings will be looking to spend big on prominent players with Rs 110.5 left in the purse.

Highlights:

Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are three major captaincy candidates in the mega auction.

Rajasthan Royals will go into the mega auction with the lightest purse.

A franchise can have a minimum and maximum of 18 and 25 players respectively.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is just around the corner. Considering the number of star players entering the auction and the incease in funds available for franchises, there are a few bidding wars expected. 

A franchise can pick a maximum of 25 players including eight overseas. A few franchises may not put to pick too many players after spending big on prominent names. However, they need to have at least 18 players in their squad.

Here's a look at number of players franchises have, purse left -

Mumbai Indians - 

MI retained their core ahead of the auction - Jasprit Bumrah (INR 18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (INR 16.35 crore), Hardik Pandya (INR 16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (INR 16.30 crore) and Tilak Varma (INR 8 crore). They can use one Right to Match (RTM) card to retain an uncapped player. Players like Anshul Kamboj, Nehal Wadhera can be roped back in via RTM card. The five-time IPL champions have INR 45 crore left in the purse. They will be looking for a star wicketkeeper-batter in the auction. 

Chennai Super Kings -

CSK retained five players ahead of the auction as well. Their retained players are - Ruturaj Gaikwad (INR 18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (INR 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 13 crore), Shivam Dube (INR 12 crore) and MS Dhoni (INR 4 crore). They have place for one capped or uncapped player via using RTM card in the auction. MI have Rs 55 crore left in the purse. They will need a back-up wicketkeeper as well. Among plyers they released, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and others can be roped back in via RTM card.

Kolkata Knight Riders -

KKR released their IPL 2024-winning captain Shreyas Iyer but still exhausted all their retentions. The defending champions' six retentions are - Rinku Singh (INR 13 crore), Varun Chakravarthy (INR 12 crore), Sunil Narine (INR 12 crore), Andre Russell (INR 12 crore), Harshit Rana (INR 4 crore) and Ramandeep Singh (INR 4 crore). They can't use any RTM card. They will look for a captaincy candidate in the mega auction along with a star wicketkeeper-batter. They may have to spend a hefty amount if they want to acquire the services of England's Phil Salt. Other star players they released are Venkatesh Iyer, Mitchell Starc, uncapped Angkrish Raghuvanshi and others. 

Sunrisers Hyderabad -

SRH retained five players ahead of the auction and have INR 45 crore left in the purse. They use RTM for one uncapped player. Their star retention was Heinrich Klaasen. He broke the record for most expensive player via retentions. Their other retentions were -Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore), Abhishek Sharma (INR 14 crore), Travis Head (INR 14 crore) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (INR 6 crore). It will be tough for them to get back the services of Washington Sundar.

Rajasthan Royals -

The inaugural edition's champions have exhausted all their retentions as well. Their six intentions are - Sanju Samson (INR 18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (INR 18 crore), Riyan Parag (INR 14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (INR 14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (INR 11 crore) and Sandeep Sharma (INR 4 crore). They don't have any RTM cards left to get back the likes of Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin. They will be going after spinners in the auction. However, they may go for a few underrated spinners with Rs 41 crore left in the purse, lowest for a franchise in the auction. 

Gujarat Titans -

Gujarat Titans can use one RTM card for a capped player, Indian or overseas. Their retentions are - Rashid Khan (INR 18 crore), Shubman Gill (INR 16.50 crore), Sai Sudharsan (INR 8.50 crore), Rahul Tewatia (INR 4 crore) and Shahrukh Khan (INR 4 crore). They have Rs 69 crore left in the purse. They can exercise the RTM card for Mohammed Shami, David Miller, Spencer Johnson or Noor Ahmad. With Wriddhiman Saha retired, they will look for a wicketkeeper as well. They need a few prominent pacers in their ranks as well.

Delhi Capitals -

DC released their captain Rishabh Pant and retained four players - Axar Patel (INR 16.50 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (INR 13.25 crore), Tristan Stubbs (INR 10 crore) and Abishek Porel (INR 4 crore). DC need a new captain and Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul are two good options available in the auction. They have Rs 73 crore available in the purse and two Right to Match (RTM) cards which can be used for a capped and one uncapped player or two capped players. If not Pant, they can reinvest in Jake-Fraser McGurk, Khaleel Ahmed and others via RTM card.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru -

RCB have INR 83 crore left in the purse after retaining three players - Virat Kohli (INR 21 crore), Rajat Patidar (INR 11 crore) and Yash Dayal (INR 5 crore). They have three RTM cards available. They can either use RTM for three capped players or one capped alongside two capped ones. Players they can rope back in via RTM card are Mohammed Siraj, Glenn Maxwell, Will Jacks, Akash Deep and others. RCB need a new captain and can bid aggressively for their former player KL Rahul and Pant. They have plenty left in the purse to rope in several star players.

Lucknow Super Giants -

LSG have retained five players ahead of the mega auction - Nicholas Pooran (INR 21 crore), Ravi Bishnoi (INR 11 crore) Mayank Yadav (INR 11 crore), Mohsin Khan (INR 4 crore) and Ayush Badoni (INR 4 crore). They have INR 69 crore left in the purse and can use RTM card for one capped player. They can retain the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Krunal Pandya via RTM card. Pooran is a captaincy candidate but LSG may look for a leader in the auction as well. 

Punjab Kings -

PBKS have retained just two uncapped players - Shashank Singh (INR 5.5 crore) and Prabhsimran Singh (INR 4 crore). They can retain four capped players via RTM cards. PBKS have the heaviest purse (INR 110.5 crore) going into the auction. PBKS' new head coach Ricky Ponting will have a long list of players they will be bidding for in the auction. They need a captain and are likely to bid for one of the most if not the most experienced players in the mega auction.
