Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer Jasprit Bumrah is not too expressive on the field. In the previous game, he was seen calming down head coach Mahela Jayawardene on the boundary, assuring him that he will deliver. In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Qualifier 2, Jayawardene was once again animated as he signalled instructions from the dugout. Following a reaction from the field, Bumrah was smiling.
The incident took place during the 16th over of Punjab Kings' (PBKS) run chase. PBKS needed 47 runs from 25 balls. Shashank Singh was new at the crease and Shreyas Iyer was leading the run chase.
In the video Pollard can be seen talking to someone. Jayawardene was signalling instructions and Bumrah raised his hand. After the reaction, Bumrah smiled. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma who was subbed out was sitting in the dugout as well.
Bumrah goes wicketless
In the 17th over, Hardik Panyda introduced Trent Boult into the attack. He went for 10 runs but Pandya got rid of Shashank with a direct hit. Bumrah's last was saved for the 18th over. He conceded eight runs including a boundary off Iyer's bat despite a pin-point yorker. Bumrah went wicketless and conceded 40 runs. He was taken to the cleaners in the powerplay overs by Josh Inglis who hit two sixes and two fours in the fifth over.
In the eliminator clash against Gujarat Titans (GT), Bumrah had got the wicket of Washington Sundar with a similar yorker delivery. But, Iyer stayed low and negotiated well with the delivery, guiding the ball towards third man boundary.
Pandya distraught, lauds special Bumrah
Pandya was on his knees after PBKS won by five wickets with an over to spare. Bumrah came to console and take him for customary handshake. The all-rounder was asked whether he should have handed Bumrah the ball when PBKS needed 41 off the final four overs.
"In hindsight, it would have been different and it would have been too early as well, Boom knowing the situation if even 18 balls are left Jassi can be Jassi and he can do something special and it just didn't happen today," he said in the post-match presentation.
