KL Rahul-starrer Delhi Capitals (DC) pulled off a thrilling chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18. It proved to be a productive day for both Rahul to played a crucial knock of 34-ball 57 which helped DC chase down the 176-run target.
DC's chase began precariously, with the team reduced to 18/3 inside the powerplay following a sensational opening spell by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. However, the innings was steadied by crucial half-centuries from Rahul and Tristan Stubbs, which successfully put the visitors back on track. Despite a spirited late-innings comeback from RCB that brought the equation down to 15 runs off the final over, David Miller showcased his class. He finished the game in style, smashing two sixes and a boundary to seal the Capitals' third win of the season with just one ball to spare.
Virat, Salt weren't happy with the way the ball was coming on: KL Rahul
Addressing the media at the post-match presentation, Rahul, who assumed the role of stand-in captain due to Axar Patel being sidelined with cramps, remarked that the pitch had offered significant assistance to the bowlers early on. He emphasized that the team's strategy remained focused on playing proper cricketing shots. Furthermore, he noted that he felt no nerves during the tense death overs, fully trusting the capabilities of Tristan Stubbs and David Miller to guide the team to victory.
"I could see Virat and Phil Salt weren't happy with the way the ball was coming on. Us losing three wickets in the first six overs didn't make it easy for us. So yeah, all in all, it was a really good cricket game. After losing three quick wickets, the conversation was to continue playing good cricket shots and see how we could find boundaries while still putting pressure on the bowlers. We didn't want to go into our shell because if the run rate keeps climbing, it gets harder and harder towards the end," Rahul said after the match.
Rahul noted that as the game progressed, the ball began to show signs of reverse swing, which added another layer of difficulty for the batters. This technical observation played a significant role in how the Delhi Capitals approached the latter stages of their chase.
There was full faith in Stubbs and Miller: Rahul
Rahul also highlighted the quality of RCB's death bowling attack. Acknowledging the threat posed by those bowlers, Rahul explained that the team was wary of letting the contest drag on. Consequently, their goal was to capitalise on scoring opportunities early to ensure they didn't have to rely on a high-pressure finish against such a formidable bowling unit.
"We just wanted to stay in the moment, take it one over at a time and try to put pressure on the bowlers. (Nervous towards the end?) No, there was full faith in Stubbs and Miller. They do this on a daily basis for South Africa and in franchise cricket. We also knew that the last two overs were going to be a gamble for RCB as well. We knew that Romario Shepherd or maybe Suyash Sharma would bowl, which gave our batters a good chance to hit a couple of sixes. Ideally, we wouldn't have wanted it to go to the 20th over, but we'll take the win," he added.
With this hard-fought victory, the Delhi Capitals have climbed to fourth place in the standings, boasting six points from three wins and two losses. Meanwhile, despite the defeat, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru remain in second position, holding a tally of eight points with a record of four wins and two losses.
