Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene has put all speculations/concerns around Rohit Sharma’s fitness to bed ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Last month, Rohit suffered a hamstring injury. He missed several games and returned to action. He has been playing as an impact player and there are concerns about his fitness ahead of the ODI series against Afghanistan and for the ODI World Cup 2027 as he will be 40 years old by then. However, Jayawardene has said that Rohit is 100 per cent fit as per him and MI medical team.
“Yes, he had a hamstring injury. We gave him the time that he needed to recover from that and then he came back," Jayawardene said in the pre-game press conference in Mumbai.
“The first game also, we were cautious even with his batting, the way he was running because he had to adapt to it slowly, gradually coming back into it. But for me, the medical team, everything is 100%."
Rohit hasn’t been on the field much, playing as an impact player. Head coach Jayawardene said that Rohit understands what the team needs and he doesn’t think about the Indian team’s requirement when assembling the MI team.
“To be honest, I don’t think about the Indian team or what their requirement is when I am assembling a team for Mumbai Indians. Rohit understands that he is a team player. He understands what is required for Mumbai Indians," said the former Sri Lanka captain.
Rohit’s numbers in IPL 2026
Rohit has played eight games this season. He has scored 283 runs from eight innings at an average of 40.42 and strike rate of 160.79, including a couple of half-centuries. He will be seen in action in MI’s clash against RR on May 24 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Rohit’s ODI series participation subject to fitness
Recently, Rohit has been named in the ODI squad but there was asterisk in front of his name, indicating that his participation is subject to fitness. The veteran opener will have plenty of time to recover as the ODI series against Afghanistan at home does not start until June 14.
