Cricketing legend MS Dhoni, who is known for his calmness during the tough pressure situations, recalled an incident when he lost his cool during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. The incident happened in 2019 during an IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals when Dhoni lost his cool and entered the field of play to argue with the on-field umpires over a controversial no-ball decision. The incident took place during the last over of the clash at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 11, 2019.
CSK needed 8 runs from three balls when Ben Stokes bowled a no ball. The umpire who initially declared that a no ball changed his decision, which invited a strong reaction from Dhoni, he stormed onto the field to confront the umpires. As a result of his shocking behaviour, he was slapped with a fine of 50% of his match fees.
Recalling that incident during a recent event, Dhoni, when asked by Mandira Bedi “if he ever lost his cool?" said, “Lots of time. It has happened; one of the IPL games, it happened. I just walked on the field. So that was a big mistake."
“But other than that, also, there have been instances where something gets triggered because we play a sport where the stakes are very high; you’re supposed to win every game," he added.
MS Dhoni is arguably the best captain in the history of the IPL. He led CSK to five IPL titles, which is the most by any team. The star wicketkeeper left his captaincy before IPL 2024. CSK appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as their new captain after MS Dhoni.
Dhoni will now be seen in action in the upcoming edition of the IPL where he can be seen featuring CSK. Chennai will start their IPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians.
