Delhi Capitals (DC) in a video posted on their social media announced former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Faf du Plessis as their vice-captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The 40-year-old will be a deputy of new captain Axar Patel who will lead DC after Rishabh Pant's exit.
"I am vice-captain of DC and I am very excited. Delhi has been great and the boys have been fantastic. Definitely I feel happy and I feel ready," Du Plessis said in a video where he seems to be talking to someone on phone.
Du Plessis led RCB in three IPL seasons after Virat Kohli stepped down as captain. He was roped in for his base price of Rs 2 crore by DC. He has led RCB in 42 games. RCB won 21 and lost 21 under the Proteas batter's leadership. In two out of three reasons, RCB reached playoffs under him. He also led Saint Lucia Kings to title win in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024.
DC will take on Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their IPL 2025 campaign opener on March 24 in Visakhapatnam.
Meanwhile, former LSG captain KL Rahul will not be seen in a leadership role. Rahul was roped in for Rs 14 crore by the franchise.
Axar on becoming captain
"It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I'm deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me," Axar said in a media release.
"I've grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward," he added.
Axar's IPL captaincy debut
Axar made his IPL captaincy debut last season when Pant faced a one-match ban for maintaining slow over rate. Against RCB, Axar's IPL captaincy debut ended in defeat. DC lost to RCB by 47 runs at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
