Rajat Patidar led RCB to second consecutive IPL title

RCB downed GT by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final to lift the trophy

Rajat Patidar stormed into the history books after powering Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to the IPL 2026 title after a dominant performance against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. With this landmark victory, RCB has successfully secured the prestigious trophy for the second consecutive year. This back-to-back triumph follows their historic maiden title win in 2025, which was also achieved under Patidar's inspired leadership.

This monumental achievement places RCB in an elite tier as only the third franchise in IPL history to successfully defend their crown. Furthermore, Patidar has joined the legendary MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma as the only captains to win the tournament in successive seasons; Dhoni accomplished the feat with CSK in 2010 and 2011, while Rohit mirrored it with MI in 2019 and 2020. Beyond this trio, Gautam Gambhir remains the only other skipper with multiple championships, having guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in 2012 and 2014.

Patidar has also set a unique individual milestone by becoming the first captain in league history to win the trophy in both of his first two seasons at the helm. While iconic leaders like Shane Warne, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya famously lifted the silverware in their debut managerial stints, none of them managed to retain the title the following year. Hardik Pandya came closest by reaching the final in his first two seasons, but his Gujarat Titans narrowly missed out on the consecutive honor after losing a last-ball thriller to CSK in 2023.

In addition to these milestones, the RCB skipper has etched his name in the record books as the captain who required the fewest matches to win two IPL titles. Patidar has incredibly secured multiple trophies while captaining the franchise in just 28 games. This exceptional efficiency breaks the long-standing record previously held by Rohit Sharma, cementing Patidar's legacy as one of the most clinical leaders the tournament has ever seen.

Adding to his historic list of achievements, Rajat Patidar has now become the first player to win two IPL titles as captain before making his T20 International debut. The only other skipper to win an IPL championship prior to playing the shortest format on the international stage was Shane Warne. However, the circumstances were vastly different for the Australian legend, who had actually retired from white-ball cricket before the first-ever T20I was even contested in 2005. By the time Warne famously guided the Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural title in 2008, he had already bid adieu to all forms of international cricket.

This second consecutive championship continues an absolute fairytale story for Patidar, whose rise to the top of the cricketing world has been nothing short of extraordinary. Just four years prior, the batter had gone completely unsold in the IPL auction, seemingly overlooked by every franchise. His fortunes shifted dramatically when RCB signed him as an injury replacement midway through the 2022 season, setting off a remarkable trajectory that has now seen him transform from an undrafted backup into a two-time title-winning captain.
