Goa-born spinner Shadab Jakati has opened up on his time with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). After being part of two Indian Premier League (IPL) title wins with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the left-arm spinner joined RCB but played just one match for them in 2014 edition. More than a decade later after leaving RCB, Jakati said that the management focused on only two to three big players which was a major reason for their inability to win an IPL trophy.
"It's a team game. If you want to win trophies, the team needs to play like a unit. 2-3 players cannot help you win the trophy. Chennai had a strong group of Indian players and some decent foreign players. It is important to get your combination. When I was in RCB, they would focus on 2-3 players only," Jakati said in an interaction with Sportskeeda.
Jakati further said that RCB players were good but lacked camaraderie. He played just one match for them and conceded 41 runs from 3.4 overs.
"There was a huge difference as far as team management, dressing room atmosphere is concerned. Players were very good, but there was no camaraderie, the players did not gel properly," Jakati added.
Jakati then compared it to the atmposphere at CSK. He became one of the vital cogs in the wheel for CSK for a few seasons.
"As I said, the role of the team management is quite significant. Chennai's management was very good actually. They looked after their players nicely. These are the small things which make a big difference. So, these are the differences I felt in CSK and RCB."
Jakati's contribution in IPL 2010 and 2011 finals
Under MS Dhoni's captaincy, Jakati was a winning member in IPL 2010 and 2011. In the IPL 2010 final, he got the crucial wicket of Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Sachin Tendulkar who scored 48 runs from 45 balls. He took two wickets for 26 runs from three overs. CSK won the final by 22 runs. In the 2011 edition's final against RCB, he got the prized wicket of AB de Villiers. He bowled four overs, conceded 21 runs and bagged two wickets. CSK outclassed RCB in the final with a 58-run win.
Jakati's IPL career
Jakati made his IPL debut in 2009. He played four seasons for CSK and took 45 wickets. After a lacklustre season with RCB, Jakati became a part of now-defunct Gujarat Lions where he did not excel. He did not play a game after the 2017 edition.
The 44-year-old is currently playing for India Royals in Asian Legends League 2025.
