Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten knock of 87 runs from 41 deliveries proved to be the difference as his side defeated the Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets in the second qualifier of IPL 2025. PBKS will be facing-off against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final that is set to take place at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.
This is the first time in 11 years that the Punjab-based franchise has reached the IPL final. The last time they made it to this stage was back in 2014 when the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated them.
Iyer spoke to the press a day before the all-important final and praised his side for their performance against MI. However, with the trophy not yet won, the 30-year-old isn't fully satisfied.
“When I say that I am in the zone, it starts from before the match, from the warm-up and how you plan yourself and approach the game. Once I was completely locked in, I knew how I was going to rally my players, and they did a phenomenal job in restricting them to 203. From there, I had a certain plan on how I was going to play on that red-soil surface. We got a beautiful start from our openers, and then Josh came in at No. 3, so I thought I would get a little bit of time. Once my eyes were set, it was all about the flow and backing my instincts. Happy, but not content,” Iyer said after the match.
Shreyas Iyer revealed that he only slept for four hours following the MI match
The press also asked Iyer about the amount of sleep that he able to get after playing the epic knock against MI to carry his side into the final. With the match starting and ending very late due to the rain interruption, Iyer revealed that he could only get a sleep of four hours.
“I could not sleep. I only got four hours of sleep last night, and here I am. I went to my room. And then next thing I know, I am here doing the PC,” Iyer stated.
Both PBKS and RCB haven't registered a single IPL triumph so far in their histories, however one of them will finally achieve glory for the first time ever. The league, which has so far been won by seven different teams, will finally find its eighth winner following the conclusion of the much-anticipated final.
