Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill is anticipated to be back in action for their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 2, according to the team's director, Vikram Solanki. The Gujarat Titans captain had to sit out the previous game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) due to a back spasm. Currently positioned fourth on the points table, GT will be aiming for a victory against SRH to potentially climb to the second spot.
GT's team director on Shubman Gill availability for GT vs SRH clash
During the pre-match press conference, GT director Vikram Solanki addressed Shubman Gill's injury concerns, stating that the team is exercising caution with their captain. He mentioned that Gill is expected to participate in training, following which his fitness will be reassessed. The GT official expressed the team's confidence that Gill will recover in time to be fit for the crucial encounter against SRH.
“His fitness, there was a bit of a back spasm. We’re just trying to be careful with it. He’ll be at training today. We’ll just see where he’s at. We’re reasonably confident that he’s going to be OK,” said Solanki in the pre-match press conference.
For the unversed, in the latter half of the match where Shubman Gill was unable to take the field, the responsibility of captaincy for GT was assumed by their star spinner, Rashid Khan. Additionally, GT strategically utilised the Impact Player rule, bringing in Ishant Sharma to replace Gill. This substitution aimed to bolster their pace attack, adding another option alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
Despite the unfortunate injury that sidelined him during the second innings, Shubman Gill had earlier played a magnificent innings, anchoring GT to a formidable total of 209 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 20 overs. His innings was decorated with five boundaries and four sixes, and he forged crucial partnerships of 93 runs with Sai Sudharsan and 74 runs with Jos Buttler.
However, the absence of their regular captain on the field ultimately proved detrimental for GT. RR spearheaded by a sensational innings from the remarkably young 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, got off to an explosive start. Suryavanshi smashed the fastest half-century of IPL 2025 and, in an extraordinary feat, went on to become the youngest player in the history of the IPL to score a century.
“Felt a little back spasm in my back and we have a game couple of days after this, so the physio didn’t want to take a chance,” Gill had said after the game against RR.
Gill has been in commendable form in the ongoing IPL 2025. In the nine matches he has played, Gill has amassed an impressive 389 runs, which includes four half-centuries. His batting average for the season currently stands at a solid 48.62.
