Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal was hospitalised on January 30 in Agartala after he complained of a burning sensation in his mouth on the flight from Agartala to Surat.

Agarwal was travelling from Agartala to Surat where Karnataka are scheduled to take on Railways in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 clash starting February 2. En route to Surat on an Indigo flight, he was thirsty and drank something from a bottle which led to the burning sensation. He was immediately deboarded and admitted to ILS hospital in Agartala.

Sports Tak contacted Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) joint secretary Shahvir Tarapore. He said that the board is in constant touch with the doctors who have assured that Agarwal’s condition is better.

Agarwal-led Karnataka's run in Ranji Trophy 2023-24

Agarwal led Karnataka to a 29-run win against Tripura. He contributed with a half-century in the first innings as well. Karnataka are currently on the top of the Elite Group C points table with two wins, one draw, and one loss.

In Karnataka's season opener against Punjab, he registered two ducks. However, Karnataka ended up winning the match by seven wickets.

In Gujarat's narrow six-run win over Karnataka, Agarwal scored a century in the first innings but could not do much when the ball turned square during the run chase. It was followed by a draw against Goa where Agarwal scored a century.

No place for Agarwal in Test side

The 32-year-old made his last Test appearance in March 2022 against Sri Lanka. Playing in front of his home crowd, he registered scores of 4 and 22. He has scored 1,488 runs from 21 Tests at an average of 41.33. He has four centuries and six half-centuries to his name.

Agarwal has not been on selectors’ radar of late. They have put their faith in Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening spot and Shubman Gill as Cheteshwar Pujara’s successor. After Virat Kohli pulled out of the first two Tests against England, Rajat Patidar was named as his replacement. After the first Test, Sarfaraz Khan was named as a replacement for an injured KL Rahul
