Smith hurt his elbow during the short BBL stint.

Australia's stand-in captain for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, Steve Smith is yet to regain full fitness. In the pre-series press conference, Smith who suffered a blow to his elbow during short Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 stint, revealed that he will not be able to throw the ball from the boundary.

"Fortunately, this part of the world I'll be parked in the slips for the entire time," Smith told the media as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. "If I have to chase one to the boundary, hopefully one of my mates comes with me."

However, Smith also confirmed that his elbow won't be strapped and recovery has been "much better than expected".

The veteran batter will risk getting injured as he takes the field on January 29 at the Galle International Stadium in the series opener. The fitness update comes weeks ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Injury scare for Australia from South Africa

Marcus Stoinis who is a part of Durban Super Giants in the ongoing SA20 League left the field due to a hamstring issue. He did not complete his third over which was completed by Wiaan Mulder. He took the field again in the slog overs but left again after getting medical attention from the physio. Super Giants lost the match and have been eliminated from the playoffs race with their sixth loss of the season. Stoinis' half-century went in vain as Paarl Royals won the match.

After the match, Super GIants captain Keshav Maharaj gave an update on Stoinis injury.

"He just felt something in his hamstring," Maharaj said. "I don't think it was too serious but obviously the logical thing to do as a fast bowler is to go off the field. So I'm sure the medical staff will assess and then communicate with Cricket Australia.

"But I think he'll be okay. He's a soldier, he's a fighter and he's a big unit so I'm sure he'll be okay."

Cummins doubtful for Champions Trophy

Earlier, Cummins was ruled out of Sri Lanka Test series due to "increased left ankle soreness". There is a question mark over whether he will be available for the Champions Trophy 2025.

"He will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery," Cricket Australia said in a statement earlier this month. "The [national selection panel] will continue to monitor Cummins' recovery leading into the Champions Trophy."
