Babar Azam was criticised for Pakistan's poor show in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik slammed Babar Azam for his poor show in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan led by Babar were unable to qualify for the playoffs in the marquee event. They lost their two consecutive matches in the tournament where they lost their opener clash against co-host United States and arch-rivals India defeated them in their second outing of the mega event hosted by USA and West Indies.

Last year, when Babar relinquished captaincy across formats, Afridi was named captain of the T20I team. However, he did not get off to a good start losing four out of five matches in the away series against New Zealand. When Mohsin Naqvi became the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, he reinstated Babar as captain.

Babar was reappointed as Pakistan captain just before the T20 World Cup. Now, after the poor show in the T20 World Cup 2024, there are chances that Pakistan will appoint a new captain.

Speaking at a talk show, Shoaib Malik asked, "Who is our best layer? Our best player is Babar Azam. I am just talking about the top 4-5 teams. Can Babar fit in the playing XI of those teams? Of Australia, of India or of England in just this particular format? The answer is NO!"

After losing two consecutive matches, Pakistan faced a lot of criticism from their fans and former cricketers. Babar managed to score just 122 runs in the four matches of the T20 World Cup with the highest score of 44 at an average of 40.66 and a strike rate of 101.66.
