Legendary Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has voiced his opinion against the appointment of foreign coaches for Team India and Pakistan. He believes that both countries have a wealth of cricketing talent and experience among their former players, making it unnecessary to seek external coaching guidance.

During a discussion alongside Wasim Akram, Gambhir said that India and Pakistan don't need to hire overseas coaches, rather rely on their former players for the coaching responsibility. He emphasised that India's impressive performance under Rahul Dravid's leadership in the World Cup 2023 proves the idea of appointing foreign coaches overhyped.

“We saw how well India played in the World Cup and that shows that we don’t need anyone from the outside. Our problem is we are probably not able to present that well, use the laptop, or speak English that well. We don’t have those corporate skills, but we know how to put the hard yards on the field and do the groundwork,” Gambhir told Sportskeeda.

Advocating Gautam Gambhir's stance against foreign coaches, Pakistani cricket legend Wasim Akram shared his own experiences with overseas coaches. Akram revealed how certain foreign coaches had misled the Pakistan Cricket Team, failing to invest the necessary effort and dedication to their roles.

“Our foreign coaches aren’t here (in Pakistan) all the time. They don’t put efforts in going to the NCA and coaching youngsters or other coaches. They don’t work on the man-management and psychological side of things. Unhone to laddoo khilaaya hai hum sab ko (we are just being fooled),” Akram said.

Pakistan's dismal performance in the just-concluded World Cup 2023 drew widespread criticism, with the coaching staff bearing the brunt. In the aftermath of the tournament, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made the decision to overhaul the coaching staff, removing Mickey Arthur from his position as director of cricket and accepting Morne Morkel's resignation as bowling coach.

Gambhir weighed in on the issue and asserted that emotions play a crucial role in cricket, and home coaches possess an innate understanding of the value and pride associated with representing their nation.

“We have had so many great players who have won World Cups so if they want to come into the coaching setup, India and Pakistan need to back them as coaches. Emotions are very important in sport because when you wear that shirt, you know how much blood and sweat you have given to reach that level. If India don’t give extension to Rahul Dravid, I hope some Indian coach replaces him,” Gambhir concluded.
