Josh Hazlewood's four-wicket haul followed by Mitchell Starc (2/14), Mitchell Marsh (2/12) and captain Pat Cummins (2/67) helped Australia to bundle out Jasprit Bumrah-led India on 150 in the first inning of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at The Optus Stadium in Perth. India's top order Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal got out on a duck and batting great Virat Kohli managed to score just five runs. Nitish Kumar Reddy was the highest run-getter for India. He is the only Indian batter who managed to score more than 40 runs. Apart from Reddy, Rishabh Pant scored 37 runs.
KL Rahul (26 off 74 balls) showed solid technique and commendable temperament during his time at the crease. However, young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Devdutt Padikkal (0) struggled, while Virat Kohli (5) continued to face challenges with his form. Rahul’s controversial dismissal just before lunch left India in a precarious position.

With this dominating bowling, Australia's iconic bowling unit—comprising pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and spinner Nathan Lyon—etched their names in the record books during the first Test. They became the first bowling quartet in Test history to collectively reach 500 wickets while playing together. This milestone was achieved in the opening Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India in Perth. In the match's first session, Hazlewood and Starc each claimed two wickets, pushing the group’s tally past the historic 500 mark.
