India continues to hold its position at the pinnacle of the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings following the latest annual update. Despite a marginal slip of one rating point, India leads the table with 118 points. They maintain a narrow five-point advantage over second-placed New Zealand, who sit at 113 points, while Australia remains steady in third place with 109 points to round off the top three.
India rigid at top of the ICC men's ODI Team rankings
The team’s status as a global powerhouse was solidified under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. During his tenure, India displayed remarkable dominance, most notably during the 2023 ICC World Cup. The squad maintained an incredible unbeaten streak, winning ten consecutive matches to reach the final before ultimately falling to Australia.
However, the leadership landscape has shifted recently. Since taking over the captaincy during the 2025 tour of Australia, youngster Shubman Gill has faced a challenging start, with India losing both series under his direction. Interestingly, the team's only recent success came during a brief period of leadership under KL Rahul. Despite these recent setbacks and a home series loss to New Zealand, India’s historical consistency has allowed them to retain their world number-one ranking.
South Africa edge Pakistan to break into top four
The latest ICC Men’s ODI annual update has shifted the landscape of the world rankings by applying a weighted system to recent performances. Matches played since May 2025 now carry full weightage (100%), while results from the two preceding years are reduced to 50 per cent weightage. Under this new calculation, South Africa has successfully climbed into the top four with 102 points, narrowly overtaking Pakistan, who now sit in fifth with 98 points.
The middle of the pack remains largely stable, with Sri Lanka (96), Afghanistan (93), and England (89) rounding out the top eight. Further down, Bangladesh has strengthened its hold on ninth place with 84 points. This has widened the gap over the West Indies, who trail the Tigers by 10 points, a big jump from the six-point margin seen in the previous update.
These rankings carry heavy stakes as teams race for direct qualification for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. The top eight teams as of March 31, 2027, will earn an automatic spot in the tournament alongside co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Because the Proteas have already qualified as hosts, their presence in the top eight effectively opens up a qualification slot for the ninth-placed team, making Bangladesh’s current lead over the West Indies critical.
Lower down the table, several teams have made notable progress. Ireland has overtaken Zimbabwe to claim 11th place, while the USA has moved up to 13th by leapfrogging Scotland. Additionally, the UAE has made gains in the lower standings, climbing to 19th place after moving ahead of Canada.
