India are set to play two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is on the tour of West Indies starting July 12 post a long break after World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final where they lost to Australia. The first Test of the new WTC cycle will begin on July 12 at Windsor Park, Dominica.
Two of the three-ODI series will be played at Kensington Oval, Barbadaos. One ODI and T20I each will be played at Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad. Two T20Is will be played at National Stadium, Guyana. After that, the last two T20Is will be played at Lauderhill, Florida.
What will be the way forward?
While Rohit Sharma will lead Team India in the Test and ODI series, the West Indies tour will finally make it clear whether Hardik Pandya will be the permanent T20I captain or not.
Rohit, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli are yet to play a T20I since T20 World Cup. While it is not clear whether Rahul will be able to recover from the thigh surgery he picked up during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 he picked up last month that ruled him out of the season midway. Also, Kohli had a good IPL season scoring 639 runs from 14 games at an average of 53.25 including two centuries and six fifties. Kohli was also vocal that he has a lot of T20 cricket left in him.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce squads for West Indies tour. It is yet to be seen whether the big veterans will get another chance in T20 format or they will back the young guns under Pandya’s leadership.
