Former England captain Michael Vaughan has claimed that India vs Pakistan is the biggest cricketing affair in the world ahead of the Ashes after the recent fixture announcement for the T20 World Cup 2022. Vaughan, who led England to the famous 2005 Ashes win, has an adoration for his homeland and Australia but considers India vs Pakistan as the biggest rivalry in the world of cricket. The 47-year-old was recently seen commentating on the Ashes series which England lost 0-4.
“I think, we being England and Australia ex-players, we all kind of think of the Ashes as the biggest game in world cricket, it’s not! India vs Pakistan is the biggest game. Looking forward to Rohit Sharma being the captain, probably the first time he’s going to be under real pressure. It’s going to be an epic event,” the former England captain said while speaking to Star Sports.
The fixtures for the upcoming edition of the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup 2022 were announced on January 21, where the two arch-enemies will once again lock horns. The scheduled fixture will take place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and is expected to have a record attendance considering the history of the rivalry and the stadium's capacity. The fixture will take place on October 23, two days before the first anniversary of Pakistan's maiden World Cup win against India.
The Ashes which came into existence in the 19th century has a great significance in the cricketing world, but the geographical province and cultural boundaries have always seen both India and Pakistan glitter on the world stage. Along with Pakistan, India are scheduled to face South Africa, Bangladesh and two other qualifier teams in the latest edition as they will attempt to win their second T20 World Cup, having previously won the inaugural edition in 2007.
The format for the T20 World Cup will remain the same as it was in 2021. 16 teams will compete at seven different venues in 45 matches to win the coveted trophy.
