Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been suffering from a prolonged back issue, will undergo surgery for the persisting injury in New Zealand, according to a report in Cricbuzz. There will be a massive implication of Bumrah undergoing back surgery, which will force the Indian pacer to stay away from cricket for another '24 weeks'. As a result, the Mumbai Indians pacer is set to miss the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will also remain unavailable for selection for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, if India manages to qualify.

It is being reported that the medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finalised Rowan Schouten to perform the back surgery on Bumrah. Currently, arrangements are being made to ensure Bumrah reached Auckland as soon as possible.

Schouten is a well-known surgeon, who has played a key role in performing surgeries on former Kiwi pacer Shane Bond, England fast bowler Jofra Archer and a troika of Australian pacers - James Pattinson, Ben Dwarshuis and Jason Behrendorff.

The best-case scenario for India would be to have Bumrah fit by the 2023 ODI World Cup that is scheduled to be played in October-November later in the year.

Bumrah's career in 2022 was marred by a string of injuries. He last featured for India in the T20I series against Australia in September 2023 and missed all the big events from the Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup 2022 after initially being named in India's T20 World Cup squad.

Earlier, Bumrah had cleared a match simulation test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru but was under discomfort on the second day after building up to higher workloads in Mumbai.

The 29-year-old Bumrah played only five Tests, five ODIs and as many T20Is in 2022, in addition to the IPL games for Mumbai Indians.
