Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni underwent successful surgery on his knee days after winning his fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title by beating Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final. Dhoni will be at the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai for a couple more days before getting discharged.

"I spoke to him after the operation. I cannot explain what the surgery is about but we have been told it is a key-hole surgery. He sounded fine in our conversation," CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz.

Sports Medicine speciallist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala conducted the operation of the former Indian skipper Pardiwala had previously operated on Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant who has been sidelined for an indefinite period after the unfortunate accident.

Dhoni was admitted to the hospital on May 31 evening. He played the whole IPL 2023 with the knee problem. Often, he was seen batting and wicketkeeping with the knee brace.

The recovery period is still unknown. However, it is projected that he will be back to his former self after a couple of months.

Throughout the season, Dhoni had hinted that he may retire from IPL after the season. However, after CSK’s thrilling last-ball win at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Dhoni was overwhelmed by the love he received from the fans and decided to work on his fitness and then make a decision about his IPL future.

“Circumstantially, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love I have received all over. The easy thing would be to walk away from here, but the harder thing would be working hard for 9 months and try to play another IPL. It would be a gift from me, won't be easy on the body,” Dhoni had told Harsha Bhogle in the post-match presentation.
